Karah's map of Redbough including The Village and The Lights

Karah's map of Redbower (2019)

Welcome to Redbower

Hello Darklings! And welcome to Redbower. I know you’re going to love it here.

Well…maybe love is too strong a word.

It’s a funny wee town really, comprising two parts. The Village is where the humans live and there’s a few wiccans and witches of the other sort too. It’s the older part of Redbower and was built by the founders around five centuries ago.

The Lights is the part the vampires built when they decided the Village wasn’t good enough for them. Vampires can be like that. You don’t want to spend too much time in The Lights. As you can imagine, it can be a bit…well…a lot…dangerous. But it looks real pretty at night. From a distance.

The werewolves live in the forest on the edge of Redbower, but they do hang out a bit in The Village sometimes, mainly at Morgan’s Tavern. They usually stay away from The Lights. They don’t like the Vampires and they’re wary of the humans. Can’t blame them, really.

The witches don't like the vampires either.

And, of course, the vampires don't like anybody. Even other vampires.

There’s rumors that there’s selkies and mermaids in the Redbower river at the other side of town but nobody’s actually seen them that I know of and they certainly weren’t part of the founders trio. No, we had one witch, one werewolf and one vampire for that.

Each member of the founding trio were allowed to bring along 10 of their own species to live in Redbower. You can see the trio’s paintings in the Elders Council building and visitors are allowed to view them between the hours of 10am and 2pm, on weekdays. That way you shouldn’t run into any vampires. Despite what those silly movies like to tell us, vampires are scary creatures and generally unpleasant. Especially when they pop up unexpectedly.

A Brief Introduction into Who I am

I’m Dottie Hitchcock. Dorothea if we’re being formal. I’m very pleased to meet your acquaintance.

I'm the current "Historian of the Supernatural Species."

I have to say, some of those species seem to think they're more "super" than others.

No matter.

My job is to record all the important stories of the supernatural races in the hope that one day, we'll all be able to learn how to understand each other better from reading each other's stories.

Oh, and I'm human. I should probably have mentioned that earlier. In fact, it really is past time that I started training my successor. That's proven to be a bit more problematic than I originally expected.

Anyhoo.

Right now, getting the races to learn about each other without wanting to kill each other is like, literally, pushing the proverbial you know what uphill.

But, we'll get there.

Maybe.

The Arcane Guild recently decided to publish some of the stories as fiction for we humans. It's about testing the waters, I think. You know, in case they finally decide to reveal themselves at some stage.

If you want to read a small selection of our stories you can find them on the books page of this site when they're in ebook form, or you can sign up for a subscription and read them as they're being written.

I don't know if it's a good idea at all to put these stories out into the world just yet. But, I suppose if they’re seen as fiction there shouldn’t be any harm in it. Anyhoo, as historian, my job is to record the stories, not make decisions about them. Or offer opinions.

The very first story to be published will be Eilidh Moss’s. She’s the owner/operator of The Quill & Query. It’s a lovely little occult bookstore on Main Street in The Lights. She’s a vampire and a well-known businesswoman in Redbower. She got herself in a bit of bother when her daylighter, Miriam, disappeared.

Well, that tells you a bit about the little town of Redbower.

So, go ahead, have a look around. Just don’t forget to carry your holy water, a silver cross and a tube of sunscreen at all times.

Toodlepip for now,

Dottie H
